Minister Malusi Gigaba to deliver OR Tambo Lecture in Welkom
The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will host the 2017 O.R. Tambo Memorial Lecture as part of the department’s O.R. Tambo centenary programme. The year 2017 was declared as The Year of O.R. Tambo by President Jacob Zuma and in this regard DSACR has been consistent in implementing various programmes throughout the year to heed this clarion call. These programmes include the O.R. Tambo Marathon, the unveiling of O.R. Tambo statue, O.R. Tambo Boxing Tournament, and O.R. Tambo Games among others.
This event will be themed as a Black Tie event and attendance is by invitation only.
O.R. Tambo was an icon who was opposed to a South Africa divided along racial, gender and ethnic lines. He was a unifier who understood the importance of unity in the struggle for freedom. Not only was O.R. Tambo the figure that kept the ANC together for 30 years during exile, he was also responsible to lead the ANC into a formidable, militant movement ready to defeat the apartheid system. O.R. Tambo would have been 100 years old, had he lived on. It is against this background that the Department remains committed to preserving and promoting the legacy of O.R Tambo said MEC Mathabo Leeto.
