PRETORIA-The ruling African National Congress (ANC) stated today that former South African President Jacob Zuma is innocent until proven guilty, and he will continue supporting the party’s campaign for the 2019 elections.
In a statement after the announcement yesterday that the Public Prosecution Office decided to reopen corruption cases against the former ANC and South African leader, Secretary General Ace Magashule said his party will continue supporting Zuma until a Court founds him guilty.
The ANC remained on the side of the veteran anti-Apartheid fighter during the process promoted by the opposition Democratic Alliance party against him, after corruption accusations were dismissed by the court in 2009, because the evidence was considered politically manipulated.
Zuma is allegedly innocent until proven guilty, Magashule said after assuring that the ANC will not separate him from his election campaign program despite the decision announced yesterday by Attorney General Shaun Abrahams.
Although Zuma is no longer the ANC leader, a position that he held until the 54th National Conference in December 2017, he is an active member of the party who participates in the workshops related to the electoral process and the campaign prior to the 2019 general elections, the declaration states.
The ANC secretary general assured that Zuma’s situation will not affect the organization and ‘we will be able to create some platform for Zuma to try to offer and promote the clarity required by society’.
Mahashule’s communique also called on South Africans to allow the National Public Prosecution Office the space it needs to do its work unhindered and reiterated that the former president should be considered innocent until proven guilty.
