Fake Facebook account asking Devon children to send selfies

Police are investigating what they believe is a false Facebook profile – after the account asked Devon children in to send photographs of themselves.

Officers say pupils in the South Hams have been targeted and a warning has been issued to parents and children to be aware of the possible risks of sending images and personal information.

A police spokesperson said: “Please do not accept friend requests from people you don’t know. Parents are advised to speak to their children about this issue and highlight the dangers of sending images and personal information.

“If you are worried about this or worried about a friend, please contact PC Gerrard at Kingsbridge by calling 101 or email 16049@dc.police.uk.”

An individual who pretend to be someone they’re not, using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, are sometimes referred to as ‘catfish’.
