WINDHOEK: Secretary of the Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL), Elijah Ngurare called on the government to allocate N.dollars 1 billion towards youth empowerment, especially to assist young people who have business ideas but no collateral.
Speaking at the official opening of the one-day SPYL leadership training workshop here yesterday, Ngurare asked the government to make available N.dollars 1 billion from the 2013/2014 national budget to benefit the youth of this country.
Ngurare indicated that in the 2010/2011 national budget, the government allocated N.dollars 14 billion to the Targeted Intervention Programme for Employment and Economic Growth (TIPEEG) towards supporting job creation in the long term.
However, he said, N.dollars 6 billion went back to the government coffers while there are still youth with brilliant business ideas but who are wandering the streets due to lack of financial resources to start their businesses.
He said there is a need for a big budget to benefit the youth who make up over 50 per cent of the Namibian population, adding that the youth are the ones who vote in the national elections, not investors!.
