SWAKOPMUND:The Deputy Director of Civil Training in the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Edward Hauanga has urged gender unit representatives (GURs) of the MoD and the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) to be lively activists against gender stereotyping.
Speaking during the opening of a two-week workshop here yesterday, Hauanga said GURs also need to be vigilant against discriminatory practices and backward orientation towards gender equality.
He said that what happens in the broader society should also find expression in the way the MoD and NDF operate, view and treat members.
Hauanga said society views the military as a man’s world and that women are not ready to take up military careers, adding that these attitudes and behaviours are formed early in homes and communities, and have spread into institutions such as the Defence Force.
He said they are the driving forces for what will happen, and should make an effort to promote equal opportunities and support those disadvantaged, and those that had been silenced to advance their careers.
OPUWO: The Kunene Regional Coordinator for the National Youth Council (NYC), Mugale Karimbue applauded the conservancies in the region for their contribution towards the first Youth Expo to be held in Khorixas from 23 to 26 August.
Karimbue told Nampa upon enquiry today that it is necessary for all local businesses and institutions to support initiatives which aim to develop the youth, and not to leave all these responsibilities in the hands of the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture alone.
He decried the situation, saying he is very disappointed in the local businesses, both big and small and medium-sized enterprises, who are not forthcoming in giving financial support or materials to the first youth expo in the region.
Karimbue said his office had written several letters to ask for donations, but most companies operating in Kunene were not kind enough to support the first-ever youth expo with anything.
He said development of the youth should be a multi-sectoral approach, and also the responsibility of all institutions, be it private or public.
