_: The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) cordially invites the members of the media to the Provincial Environmental Awards competition. The competition focuses on both primary and high schools in the Eastern Cape with the intention of creating awareness about environmental conservation.

“The department has taken a conscious decision to focus on schools as it believes that the impact made at an early age will go a long way in securing a clean environmental future. We have been involved in the Regional and Provincial Environmental Awards Competition that involves the business sector and communities since 2002. A momentum is building in intensifying efforts and adjusting certain elements to remain relevant to the environmental challenges prevailing in our communities”, says Albert Mfenyana, General Manager for Environmental Affairs at DEDEAT.

With the clarion call made to the communities to be involved in implementing mitigation and adaptation measures, the competition motivates learners to bring about innovative and practical measures in addressing the climate change phenomenon.

The Provincial Environmental Awards Competition culminates from the regional eliminations held during the course of the year and is one of the vehicles used to create awareness about the Eastern Cape Climate Change Strategy.

The prizes for the provincial winners are as follows:

1st prize – R100 000.00

2nd prize – R75 000.00

3rd prize – 50 000.00

4th prize – R25 000.00
