Durban selected as 2022 Commonwealth Games host (dpa German Press Agency)

Berlin (dpa) – South Africa’s Durban has been unanimously awarded the
2022 Commonwealth Games, the event’s federation announced on
Wednesday.

Durban was the only bidder after Canada’s Edmonton pulled out for
financial reasons.

It is the first time the event, a mini Olympics for former British
colonial nations, will be held in Africa and it could spur South
Africa on for a full Olympic bid.

The Commonwealth Games have seemed to lose relevance in recent years
with several top stars opting out of the last edition in Glasgow in
2014.

The next Games are in Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018.
