JOHANNESBURG, Customs service officers of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) have seized counterfeit goods and drugs worth more than 8.0 million Rand (about 615,000 US dollars) at the OR Tambo International Airport here.
The items were during raids carried out various cargo sheds in the airport complex.
A woman from Sao Paolo in Brazil was found with 6.9 kilogrammes of cocaine worth almost 2.0 million Rand in her luggage and has been handed over to the police for further invesitation, says SARS spokesperson Sandile Memela.
“SARS Customs officials intercepted goods and drugs estimated at more than 8.3 million Rand at OR Tambo International Airport over the weekend,” Memela said.
“The consignments were from Hong Kong to various addresses in Gauteng suburbs.”
Gauteng Province includes Johannesburg as well as the national administrative capital, Pretoria.
Memela said the SARS Customs service was very proud of the interception as it showed their seriousness about protecting the exit and entry of goods from and into the country.
