JOHANNESBURG, The controversy surrounding South Africa’s Public Protector (Ombudsman), Busisiwe Mkhwebane, following her u-turn on her recommendation that the mandate of the Reserve Bank be changed has continues to fire up a storm within political parties in Parliament.
On Wednesday, some members of Parliament requested that she be summoned to explain herself before lawmakers.
Mkhwebane has admitted that her recommendation that the mandate of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) be changed from ensuring currency stability to focusing on economic growth was wrong. It was an honest mistake, she says.
However, those who recommended her appointment are spitting fire. They say her fatal mistake was costly, reckless and politically motivated. Others say she must be fired while others want her to appear before Parliament and explain her recommendation.
They say her recommendation was reckless and ill-considered. Even legal experts are sceptical about her suitability to hold the Public Protector’s office.
“It is quite clear that the Public Protector got the law wrong. It is not just a technical error. It has huge implications and it even affected our economy very negatively,” says legal expert Lawson Naidoo.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, has, however, accepted her explanation.
