Ouagadougou: Burkina Faso’s Customs authorities have announced a major operation resulting in the seizure of illicit products valued at more than 220 million FCFA. From March 13 to April 14, 2025, the operation targeted illegal activities across the nation, including the confiscation of explosives, narcotics, banned medicines, and contraband fuel.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the customs department reported the interception of prohibited goods totaling 221,652,300 CFA francs, alongside 176 illegal vehicles. The operation also resulted in the collection of 74,640,000 CFA francs in duties and taxes, with fines imposed amounting to 55,250,000 CFA francs. Among the seized items were 20,690 packages containing explosives such as 3,195 sticks of dynamite and 77 detonators, narcotics like amphetamines and Indian hemp, as well as prohibited medications, frozen poultry, alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, contraband fuel, batteries, cocoa, and carcasses of protected animals.
The Directorate for the Fight against Fraud and Territorial Surveillance supervised the operation. Its goals were to monitor the legality of goods and vehicles, verify registration authenticity, and detect fraud, particularly in cargoes bound for Burkina Faso and its neighboring countries.
This initiative not only resulted in significant seizures but also served as a deterrent, raising awareness about the negative impact of fraud on the economy, security, and public health. The operation enhanced the performance of customs offices and promoted collaboration with users. Burkina Faso Customs emphasized its commitment to protecting public treasury interests and securing the national territory against fraud and cross-border crime threats.
