CANBERRA, Australia: A British mother says her teenage backpacker son drank contact lens fluid and his own urine to survive three days lost in the Australian Outback.
Claire Derry reached the bedside of her 18-year-old son Sam Derry-Woodhead at Longreach Hospital in northeast Australia where he is recovering from dehydration.
She was flying from the Britain to Longreach when she was told searchers in a helicopter had found her son yesterday.
He had lost 15 kilograms.
Derry-Woodhead became lost in scrubland while jogging in tropical summer heat on Tuesday at a cattle ranch where he had been working for less than two weeks 90 kilometres from Longreach.
