OPUWO: Organisers of the Opuwo Sports Festival have decided to bring most of the best boxers in Namibia to Opuwo to showcase their talents during the upcoming annual sports festival at the town from 24 to 27 August this year.

These boxers include Paulus ‘The Hitman’ Moses, Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda, Vikapita Meroro, Wilberfoce Shihepo, Sacky Shikukutu, Immanuel Naindjala and Julius Indongo.

The Opuwo Sports Festival started in 2011 with sport codes such as football, netball and marathon.

The football tournament is sponsored by the OK Grocer with N.dollars 20 000, marathon with N.dollars 10 000 from the Okaokoland Butchery/Coffee Shop, and netball with N.dollars 5 500 from the Kunene Pharmacy.

According to organiser Steven Nomchab, at least 40 boxers have already registered to fight over two nights.

“This will be the first time that we have such big names in Namibian boxing coming to box in the region, and although local people are not convinced that they are coming, they have indeed confirmed to be in Opuwo for the fights,” noted Nomchab.

The boxing event is slated for the Opuwo Soccer Stadium.

Children under the age of 10 will be allowed in for free, while a N.dollars 10 charge was set for all other persons.

According to Chris Kangoronduezu, a boxing development coach here, the proceeds at the gate will be used to develop boxing in the region.

“The boxing activities in Opuwo are part of the promotion of the sport in the region, and we hope to start registering boxers after the event,” noted Kangoronduezu.

Nestor Tobias of the Sunshine Boxing Academy confirmed to Nampa on Sunday that his boxers will definitely be in Opuwo on Wednesday.

According to him, the boxing champions going to Opuwo is part of his academy’s road show that started in other regions last year. The Kunene, Caprivi and Kavango regions will be part of the road show this year.
