JOHANNESBURG, Dec 26– While the rest of South Africa celebrate Christmas and wait to usher in the New Year, Bafana Bafana have gone into a mini-training camp to prepare for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2015) to be played in Equatorial Guinea from Jan 17 to Feb 8.
Coach Shakes Mashaba last week named a provisional 34-man squad for the tournament in which South Africa have been drawn in Group C, referred to as the Group of Death because of the presence of perennial African favourites Ghana, Algeria and Senegal.
Bafana Bafana opened their mini-training camp in Johannesburg on Christmas Day and will remain here until next week Tuesday when the squad will be trimmed down to 23 players.
Mashaba has retained the bulk of the team who played in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in which Bafana emerged unbeaten in six matches. He named four goalkeepers, 10 defenders, 15 midfielders and five strikers.
Mashaba was quoted as saying that the bulk of the players in the squad are the ones who helped the team to be where it is now.
Bafana’s opening match of the tournament is against Algeria on Jan 19, followed by a clash against Senegal.
The team plays its last group stage match against Ghana on Jan 27.
