ADDIS ABABA, The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council has stressed that the aviation industry is crucial for the socio-economic development of Africa, with its president, Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, stating that no continent, no country, can develop without civil aviation.
He told the media here Tuesday that the ICAO was focusing on assisting the development of aviation in the continent and to have access to the socio-economic benefits which aviation supports.
He added that a lot of work needed to be done in Africa on a number of issues in general and safety in aviation in particular.
The ICAO has a programme under an African implementation plan for aviation safety specifically targeted at African nations, he stated.
According to Aliu, the ICAO is also supporting training by providing organizations like the Ethiopian Aviation Academy, which has been identified as a Centre of Excellence for training.
Ethiopian Airlines chief executive officer Tewolde Gebremariam said aviation is critical and essential for public transport services, especially in Africa, where the others modes of transportation are under-developed.
He pointed out that air cargo was the most important enabler for socio-economic development in the world in general and for development in Africa in particular. The sector’s development on the continent was very important mainly because most African countries exported agricultural and horticultural products.
