OTJIWARONGO: Otjiwarongo’s Out of Africa Town Lodge was robbed by three armed men in broad daylight last Thursday.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb told Nampa on Wednesday that the three men entered the reception area of the lodge at around 15h00 on Thursday under the pretense that they wanted to book accommodation.
“Suddenly, one of them walked behind the reception desk and pulled out a pistol which he pointed at a woman who was working there,” Khairabeb explained.
The armed man, alleged to be in his early twenties, demanded money from the woman and ordered her to open the safe where the money is kept.
Khairabeb said the safe contained only N.dollars 2 000 in cash and airtime vouchers valued at more than N.dollars 500, which the three suspects grabbed and ran away with.
The lodge worker managed to call the police, who immediately went in pursuit of the robbers.
“We managed to arrest one of them that day, and the two others are still at large,” said Khairabeb.
The police arrested the 18-year-old man Gerbard Malakia, who appeared in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon.
He was informed of his legal right to engage the legal representation of his choice or apply for a State lawyer.
Malakia was remanded in custody as the police search for his accomplices continues.
