The Commission took note of the agreement signed on 5 September 2015 on building two further stretches of the Nord Stream pipeline.
Energy security remains a key priority for the EU. As stated in the Energy Union framework strategy, energy diversification of gas sources, suppliers and routes is crucial for ensuring secure energy supplies to EU citizens and companies. To reach this objective, the Commission aims at more interconnected and competitive gas markets in Europe, with initiatives such as the Southern Gas Corridor, LNG strategy as well as Central East South Europe Gas Connectivity High Level Group.
The Commission recalls that any gas pipeline on EU territory must be built and operated in full compliance with applicable EU legislation, including the Third Energy Package, public procurement and competition rules. The Commission will, in cooperation with the relevant national regulatory authorities, ensure compliance with these rules.
