Cooperation on animal welfare is systematically discussed with EU trade partners. The Commission continues to propose such cooperation with China at any occasion.
In the frame of the Better Training for Safer Food Program(1) (BTSF), the Commission is organising EU specific training workshops on animal welfare where selected third countries, including China, are invited to participate. Furthermore in the frame of the BTSF World, a regional Workshop on EU legislation on animal welfare was organised in Korea in October 2012, with the participation of several countries including China.
At multilateral level, the EU is supporting the adoption of international standards on animal welfare by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and their implementation by the OIE member countries. In particular, the Commission is involved in the ‘Animal Welfare Standards Project’(2) carried out by the Regional OIE Collaborating Centre for Animal Welfare Science and Bioethical Analysis for Asia, the Far East and Oceania. The project aims at facilitating the implementation of the OIE standards on animal transport and slaughter in South East Asia, including specifically China as collaborating country. Such project represents an important step for progressing on animal welfare issues in China.
