Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the acceptance of Greece’s request for observer status in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) accepted Greece’s request for observer status in (CARICOM) on Friday, March 17, 2023.

The Caribbean Community consists of 15 members, the vast majority of which are island states.

The General Secretariat of the regional organisation welcomed Greece’s interest in further strengthening its long-term friendly relations with CARICOM Member States, noting, at the same time, that it looks forward to conducting enhanced political dialogue and cooperation with Greece.

This development reflects our country’s expanding relations with the region’s countries, provides new opportunities for cooperation with them, particularly on issues of shared interest such as environmental protection and insularity, and highlights Greece’s increasingly important international role, which is no longer confined to a narrow regional geographical context.

It is noted that this development was preceded by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ recent visit to Latin American and Caribbean countries (6-11.02.2023), as well as by the signing of the Agreement on Greece’s participation with observer status in the Central American Integration System (SICA) (24.02.2023).
