Africa needs to invest in training and education for women and youth to industrialize, grow the private sector and achieve sustainable development.
That’s the message from the UN Secretary-General in commemoration of Africa Industrialization Day, observed this Friday, 20 November.
Daniel Dickinson reports
This year the focus is on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as on poverty eradication and job creation for women and young people.
Ban Ki-moon said the private sector contributes roughly 80 per cent of Africa’s Gross Domestic Product and supports about 90 per cent of all jobs there.
He said SMEs have a pivotal role to play in the industrial development of the continent.
He added that the UN would continue to promote the continent’s progress towards what he called “economically enriched, socially inclusive and prosperous societies.”
