A motorist was cut free three using three sets of hydraulic equipment after a two car crash which closed a Devon road for eight hours into the early hours of this morning.

Three crews were sent to the A3072 at Killetree Cross, Holsworthy, just after 7pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called just before 7pm after the collision between a Ford Fiesta and a Ford Transit panel van.

The Fiesta was travelling Eastbound along the A3072 towards Holsworthy when it was involved in the collision with the Transit van which had been traveling in the opposite direction towards Bude.

The driver of the Fiesta, a 19-year-old man, was trapped within his vehicle for over an hour whilst emergency services worked to free him.

He suffered potentially life-changing injuries. Whilst serious, these injuries were not deemed to be life-threatening and he was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth via the Devon Air Ambulance.

The driver of the Transit van was uninjured in the collision.

The A3072 remained closed for almost seven hours to facilitate the extraction of the driver and recovery. Diversions were implemented by Highways England.

Officers from the Roads Policing Team are asking for anybody who witnessed the collision to contact the Police via 101@dc.police.ukor by phone on 101 quoting Log Number 0659 03/01/17.
