Gauteng Legislature host hybrid Safety Seminar to assess Law Enforcement Agencies in Gauteng, 03 Sept

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety will on the 3rd-4th September 2021 host a hybrid Safety Seminar to assess whether Law Enforcement Agencies in Gauteng, especially the South Africa Police Services (SAPS) are sufficiently equipped to fight crime in the Province.

The Committee is concerned about the high levels of crime in the Province and would like to make a determination on whether this could be attributed to the shortage of Police Officers and other resources such as vehicles, firearms and ammunition that are allocated to fight crime in Gauteng.

The 2019/20 crime statistics reveal that crime in Gauteng is unacceptably high. The United Nations has recommended the ratio of one (1) Police Officer to 220 civilians, however, it is reported that in South Africa, it is one police officer to 383 civilians.

This current modus operandi is highly unacceptable if we are to win the fight against crime in our Country and Province. It is for this reason that the Committee felt the need to convene various stakeholders in a form of a seminar to engage on solutions aimed at strengthening the capacity of SAPS to fight crime in Gauteng.

Members of the Media are invited to cover the Safety Seminar.
