Youths conclude training programme in Benin

ABUJA: ANOTHER batch of local youths and their counterparts from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member states have completed one-month intensive training programme in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic. They will receive their certificates on Tuesday next week.

According to a statement obtained by this publication from the Directorate of Communications at the regional headquarters in Abuja, 41 male and 23 female youths from Benin, Burkina Faso, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo are beneficiaries of the 2014 Edition, Capacity Building and Skills Acquisition programme by the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSDC) based, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The statement added that the current training, which started last month covered areas such as animal husbandry, food production and cottage industry. The Benin Youth, Sports and Games Minister Safiou Idrissou Affo, and the ECOWAS Commissioner for Social Affairs and Gender, Dr Fatimata Dia Sow, will chair the graduation.

“More than 505 West African agricultural entrepreneurs have been trained under the EYSDC annual capacity building programme at the Centre Songhaï from 2007. The programme supports youth empowerment and employment in the region, building the capacities of young entrepreneurs and contributing to their career development as well as creating business partnerships among them” the Directorate of Communications stated.

The training programme comes a few days after youth from the region underwent training before they were deployed to Ebola-stricken countries as volunteers.
