World champ Kiprop eyes China title

NAIROBI: KENYA’S world champion, Asbel Kiprop, says he is targeting to win the 2015 Marathon Championship to be contested in Beijing, China.

The 1 500 metre king, who boasts the 2008 Olympic gold title record, hopes to become Kenya’s third-time world champion in the category when he enters the Beijing road race as he seeks to consolidate his athletic prowess.

“I still want to run fast time but my priority next year is to defend the world title title in Beijing. I announced earlier this year about my bid to break the record but I disappointed my.

“However, I still harbour intentions of attacking the record and only need to plan well and have it at the right time,” said Kiprop.

During his rise to fame, Kiprop won gold medal at the Africa Championships at Nyayo National Stadium in the 1 500m race, the same contest that he sets to undertake in Beijing, China.

The hard-running marathon specialist is the only Kenyan to have won gold medals at the IAAF World Championships.

He achieved the feat twice – in Daegu (2011) and Moscow (2013).
