Pretoria: President Jacob Zuma has appointed Vuma Glenton Mashinini as a member of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
His appointment is for a period of seven years, with effect from 1 May 2015.
The appointment is made in terms of section 6 of the Electoral Commission Act, 1996 (Act N. 51 of 1996) and on the recommendation of the National Assembly.
The majority of media houses have incorrectly reported that Mashinini has been appointed as the “head, chief or chairperson” of the IEC, which the Presidency has indicated was not contained in its statement about the appointment.
“President Zuma has not yet appointed a chairperson for the IEC,” said the Presidency.
