Two suspects aged 19 and 23 years appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, 29 January 2015 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The case was remanded for further investigation.
On 28 January 2015 at about 14:00 Sydenhem police officers were doing their normal crime prevention patrols around their area when they followed up information about two suspicious looking males at Waterfall Road. The suspects were seen in the vicinity and were approached by the police. It is alleged that the suspects opened fire on the members and the members retaliated. No one was wounded and both men were arrested. One suspect was found in possession of a .38 special revolver and the second suspect was found with a toy gun. It is suspected that they were on their way to commit robbery.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the swift reaction by the Police that led to the arrest of three suspects and recovery of illegal firearms. “I also thanked the community of Sydenhem for supplying us with valuable information that led to the arrest of the suspects. If this information was not given to the police, the suspects would have still carry these unlicensed firearms and they would have to commit robbery somewhere,’ she said.
