On Thursday 15 January 2015, at 18:10, two Metro Rail Security Guards were on duty at the Effingham Railway Station. It is alleged that a security guard supervisor was visiting the two guards who were on duty when an argument ensued.
The supervisor fatally shot both the security guards and removed a firearm from one of the victims before fleeing the scene. The deceased who are aged 40 and 45 sustained several gunshot wounds to their bodies. Two counts of murder were opened for investigation at Greenwood Park SAPS. The suspect is still being sought by police.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the killing of the victims. “Greenwood Park SAPS detectives will work around the clock to make sure that the suspect is apprehended. We appeal to the suspect to rather hand himself over and co-operate with investigators,” she said..
