The Durban High Court convicted and sentenced Delani Njongo (33) and Bapho Scelo Ngubane (36) for kidnapping, murder and attempted murder. The first accused was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment as well as twenty five years. The second accused was sentenced to forty years imprisonment.
On 31 August 2014 at 23:00, the two victims were at C section in Umlazi when they were approached by the accused at a gunpoint. They forced them into a motor vehicle and drove off to a school soccer field in the area.
One of the victims managed to escape and whilst fleeing he heard a gunshot go off. He hid for a while before returning to the soccer field where he found his injured friend who died at the scene. A case of murder was opened at Umlazi Police Station. Both the accused were arrested on September 2014 and they were denied bail until they were sentenced on 7 May 2015.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Umlazi detectives for thoroughly investigating this case. “The sentence handed down by the Judge is highly appreciated and is also an indication of the high level of investigation that was conducted. We are so glad that families of the victims will receive closure now that the matter is finalised,” she said.
