Yesterday 18 May 2015 Pietermaritzburg Regional court convicted and sentenced a 17-year-old man to a total of 46 years imprisonment for rape, abduction and malicious damage to property.
He was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for rape, 18 years for abduction and ten years for malicious damage to property. It is alleged that on Friday 16 August 2013, at approximately 20:45, the victim (12) was sleeping at home when she heard someone knocking at the door. The accused used his spear to force the door open. He threatened the victim with a spear and took her way where she was raped. A case of rape, abduction and malicious damage was opened at Taylors Halt police station. Through investigation the accused was arrested and charged with all counts.
In another separate incident yesterday Pietermaritzburg Regional Court sentenced Musawenkosi Dlamini (20) to 18 years imprisonment for raping a 11-year-old victim. During December 2012, the accused Musawenkosi Dlamini was at Imbali Township, Pietermaritzburg when he approached the victim and took her to his room to watch movies. He then raped the victim and the case was opened at Plessislaer police station for further investigation.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded these heavy sentences handed down to both accused. This will send a clear message to the would-be culprits that the police will leave no stones unturned in arresting those involved in criminal activities.
