Troops from the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Monday clashed with suspected Boko Haram insurgents at Mainari village, not far from Kawuri in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, security and local sources said.
Our correspondent learnt that dozens of Nigerian troops, supported by youth vigilantes, who were on their way to reclaim Bama town in central part of the state were ambushed by the insurgents.
A credible source described the encounter as “a bad outing” stressing that troops had to retreat when it was evident that going further would not yield positive result.
A security officer, who craved for anonymity said,” Our troops were on their way to Bama which has been under the control of the Boko Haram when the sad encounter ensured. Honestly speaking our soldiers were well prepared and had the weapons to confront the terrorists but sadly, things went awry midway.”
A youth vigilante, Musa Aliyu said their members participated in the attempt to capture Bama.
“It was a botched operation with heavy casualty on our side. We lost many of our members even though many terrorists were also killed. Some soldiers were also killed,” he said.
He said the insurgents had also carted away assorted weapons and went back to where they came from.
Our correspondent reports that there was a big military formation in Kawuri which is less than 40 kilometers to Bama, and another in Konduga.
