The Portfolio Committee of Trade and Industry is on a series of oversight visits to expose Committee members to actual working environments of entities falling under the Department of Trade and Industry. These visits have highlighted challenges and successes faced by these entities.
The Committee has completed its visits to the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS), the National Lotteries Board, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA), the National Gambling Board (NGB), the National Consumer Commission (NCC), and the National Credit Regulator (NCR). The Committee intends visiting the National Empowerment Fund today.
The Committee welcomed the initiatives of the Design and Innovation institute located within SABS. The Institute for the last 18 months has mentored a number of young and rural entrepreneurs assisting them with the development and packaging of their inventions to enable them to compete in the market place. Some of these products are already being sold on the international market.
The oversight visit highlighted the importance of the Technical Infrastructure Institutions namely SABS, NMISA, SANAS and the NRCS.
These institutions play a critical behind-the-scenes role ensuring that the Industrial Policy Action Plan is implemented effectively, South African businesses are able to compete nationally and globally and that consumers are protected from unsafe products and services and unscrupulous business practices. The Committee welcomed the continuous progress made in this regard.
The Committee noted the challenges facing institutions such as the CIPC, the NLB, and the NGB. The Committee welcomes the progress made by the NCR but will continue to monitor all entities to ensure that they fulfil their mandates and comply with relevant legislation.
