Several hundred people participated in the Khumbulani LGBTI Pride march in Khayelitsha on Saturday.
Members of organisations such as Equal Education, FreeGender, Triangle Project, Gender Dynamix and Inclusive and Affirming Ministries attended the event. The march started at OR Tambo Hall and proceeded to Buye’lembo Village.
Participant Ayamangalisa Badli said it was the best gay and lesbian march she has attended. She described it as meaningful with a good purpose.
“Everything about it was well planned [from] the speeches to the gathering venue. People were able to talk to each other and there was also entertainment and free food. After the long walk it felt like we are at a picnic,” she said.
Thembisile Ngqangiso-Kelem said, “Having Pride in the township was a good move because people in our townships should know that homosexuality is not a disease, and that me as a gay person I am proud and it has nothing to do with being black or white.”
Marlow Valentine said, “Khumbulani Pride is a good example of what a Pride should be like. It has to accommodate every gender, sexuality and race. And also there should be dialogs where people engage with each other and address matters that affect them in their societies.”
