Taraba needs funds to fight drug abuse

ABUJA: THE Katsina State Command of National Drug LawEnforcement Agency (NDLEA) has appealed for funding from government toenhance its operations.State Commandant of NDLEA, Hajiya Maryam Gambo, said the funding wouldenable the agency build proposed rehabilitation and counselling centres.

She also solicited for the provision of vehicles to boost the command’smobility to tackle drug problem in the state.Meanwhile, earlier, the agency said destroyed drugs worth over N800 million.Gambo said the agency arrested 571 suspects, out of which 17 were females,and made a seizure of 781 059 kg of various drugs in 2014.

The NDLEA commandant explained that 94 suspects were sentenced to variousjail terms within the period.Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema said his administration had set up twocommittees for the fight drug abuse and sponsored drug enlightenmentcampaigns carried out in all 34 local government councils.

Shema, represented by State Commissioner of Health, Mannir Talba, saidillicit drugs abuse and trafficking was a serious issue all over the worldand called for more collaborative effort to address the problem.Shema called on parents to take seriously their primary responsibility ofinculcating discipline among children to guide them against negativeinfluence of drug abuse.
