On 16 January 2015 at 23:10 Maphumulo Police Station received a report of a shooting at Mbitane area in KwaMaphumulo. Police proceeded to the scene and on their arrival they found the lifeless body of a one-year-old boy. It is alleged that the family was attacked by unknown suspects who tried to set the house alight but failed. The suspects fired shots at the house fatally wounding the one-year-old and injuring his 12-year-old brother. The motive of the attack is unknown at this stage. The father of the children who is a rank manager at the KwaMaphumulo Taxi Rank was not at home when the attack took place. KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the senseless killing of an innocent child. “We are confident that our members will work around the clock and arrest these heartless murderers. These individuals that kill people indiscriminately must be brought to book and we appeal to the community at large to work together with police to remove these thugs from society,” she said.
