MHLUZI – Four men Dion Sibeko (34), Vusi Sithole (25), Nhlanhla Sindane (17) and Mongezi Masilela (22), appeared before the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court today facing charges of kidnapping and murder.
Their court appearances come after police discovered a body of a man in his 20s, Mxolisi Sigudu at a dumping site in Mhluzi near Middelburg. Sigudu had been reported missing on Sunday, 15 February 2015, after he was last seen by community members being kidnapped, assaulted and locked in the boot of a vehicle by certain men on Friday, 13 February 2015. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that the person, whose body had been burnt, was Sigudu, the one reported as missing.
Following the discovery of the body, an intensive investigation was launched and it led to the arrest of the suspects. Information at police disposal revealed that one of the suspects, Sibeko, accused the victim of stealing from him. He then mobilised his friends, caught the victim, assaulted and forcefully locked him in the boot of his (Sibeko) vehicle and they drove around the Mhluzi area with him. They then took him to the bushes where they tied him to a tree and assaulted him, then locked him in the boot of the vehicle again and drove off with him to Carolina.
When they returned back to Mhluzi, they opened the boot and discovered that the victim was no longer breathing. They then took him to the dumping site where they burnt his body with a tyre. Shortly after the incident, the suspect returned to the site where they took his body and stashed it in a rubbish bin that was around that area and covered it with rubbish.
The suspects were remanded in custody until 26 February 2015, pending bail application.
