In the early hours of yesterday 17 April 2015, at Umlazi W section, members from Inanda detectives were driving to their residence coming from work when they spotted suspicious looking men. The suspects suddenly produced firearms and fired towards the members injuring one of the police officials in his left thigh. The police returned fire and called for back-up. The injured member was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. A search for suspects was conducted together with Umlazi SAPS and Public Order Police, one of the suspects aged 43 was apprehended while hiding in the nearby bush. Two firearms an AK47, a pistol, crow bar, bolt cutter and 31 live rounds of ammunition were found at the scene. The other suspect is still being sought by the police.
It is alleged that the suspects were at Maweleni, Umlazi, to commit a business robbery, where they tied the security guards with ropes in their guard room. They took two cellphone batteries and two handsets. It appeared that something disturbed them and they fled the scene towards the main road where they saw the police officials and fired shots at them. Charges of attempted murder and business robbery are being investigated by Umlazi SAPS. The arrested suspect will appear in the Umlazi Magistrates’ Court on Monday 20 April 2015.
“The police will make sure that they protect themselves when they came under fire. We wish the injured man in blue a speedy recovery,” said the Provincial Commissioner of Police in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
