The U.S. Embassy reiterates our profound condolences to the family of Pierre Korkie, and to all South Africans who have lost this exemplary fellow citizen. Our nations are united against the scourge of terrorism, and we share in this moment of despair and sorrow at the loss of human lives.
Last week, when it became apparent that the life of an American citizen was under imminent threat, our President made a difficult leadership decision to send Special Forces troops to free him.
The United States was not aware of the progress of the negotiations between The Gift of the Givers and the Yemeni hostage takers, nor of a promise for Pierre Korkie’s release.
Moreover, at no time was it apparent that Pierre Korkie was being held in the same space as the American photojournalist Luke Somers. We moved with the information available in an attempt to save lives, and that rescue operation unexpectedly ended in the deaths of both Pierre Korki and Luke Somers. We join South Africa in mourning the loss of these lives in Yemen this weekend.
