The DA is appalled by the anti-Semitism and intolerance displayed by the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
Media reports quote the DUT SRC general secretary, Mqondisi Duma, as saying “As the SRC we had a meeting and analysed international politics. We took the decision that Jewish students, especially those who do not support the Palestinian struggle, should deregister.”
That a group of senior students occupying important leadership positions called for a blanket exclusion from higher education of all students of a particular religious affiliation, is deeply discriminatory and unconstitutional.
The DA welcomes the stance taken by the DUT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmed Bawa, who vehemently rejected the suggestion saying that no student should be denied a place at any university because of race, colour, creed or beliefs. The SRC demand, he said, was “totally unacceptable”.
The DA will stand in defence of our universities as havens of free expression, diversity of opinion and mutual tolerance. We call upon all Universities to bring these values to the fore.
