Coming from a 2-1 win over Namibia in a friendly match this past weekend, the South African Senior National Women’s team, Sasol Banyana Banyana arrived in Harare on Wednesday afternoon, 9th July, to play another friendly match against the Mighty Warriors of Zimbabwe.
The match will be played at the Rufaro Stadium in Harare, the Capital City of Zimbabwe, this Friday, 11 July at 15h00.
Upon arrival in Zimbabwe from Namibia, the team proceeded to train under cool weather conditions.
The friendly matches are part of preparations for the 9th edition of the African Women’s Championships, that will be held in Namibia from 11-25 October this year.
The top three finishers at the tournament will automaticaly qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup set for Canada.
This will be coach Vera Pauw’s second encounter with Zimbabwe in a friendly match, after leading Sasol Banyana Banyana to a 2-2 draw in her first match in charge in April this year.
“The first match we played against Zimbabwe at home was not an easy one, we made too many mistakes defensively, which we have worked on. We are now in the proccess of mastering our tasks when we have position and when we do not have position. I would like to express my gratitude to SAFA and Sasol for managing to arrange the match against Zimbabwe because the more competative matches we play, the ger and better we become,” said Pauw.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will be using the match to prepare for the under-20 Zone VI Youth games scheduled for December.
“The team we currently have is a mix of under20 and senior players. We are in the process of building our team and the match against South Africa will give us a chance to asses the players,” said Xolisani Gwesela, ZIFA communications manager.
