SACTWU Opposes Factory Liquidation [press release]

The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) is in the process of opposing the liquidation of AJ CMT.

AJ CMT is a clothing factory in Lansdowne employs 197 workers and manufacturers clothing items for retailers such as Truworths, Identift and Total Sports. Despite a provisional liquidation being signed on Wednesday 9 December , this morning machinery was being removed from the factory.

SACTWU officials are currently at the factory briefing workers and have managed to stop machinery from being removed from the premises. The Union will not be bullied by employers when we have presented the management with many alternatives to save the company.

Many clothing workers are single mothers and often have to take care of an extended family too, the liquidation comes before Christmas time- a terrible gift for workers who now have to spend the entire festive season worrying about how they will feed their families next year.
