Durban Organised Crime Unit and Special Task Force conducted an intelligence driven operation which led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a hunting rifle, live rounds of ammunition and an axe.
Information gathered revealed that the suspects were planning to kill two rhinos in one of the Safari parks in Pongola.
Police pounced on them and seized a 375 hunting rifle with 5 live rounds of ammunition, a silencer and an axe suspected that it was also going to be used to dehorn the rhinos.
The suspects were taken to Pongola Police Station for detention. They will be charged for illegal hunting of rhinos and illegal possession of firearm as well as ammunition. They will appear in Pongola Magistrates’ Court on 2 February 2015.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the police on the arrests.
“We are thrilled that we managed to prevent crime before it could be executed. We will not stop to fight criminals and do what we sworn to do, serve and protect,” she said.
