The twenty-nine accused from Freedom Park in Rustenburg charged with Public Violence case appeared in the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 10 February 2015. They were remanded in custody and will appear again on 17 February 2015 for legal representation.
The accused were apprehended on Sunday, 8 February 2015 after being found in possession of suspected stolen goods following public violence that erupted in Freedom Park, outside Phokeng where one shop was looted.
The accused age’s ranges between 23 years and 60, were found in possession of suspected stolen goods after police searched their places. The goods were looted from a local store on Saturday, 7 February 2015 after the community pelted one African male with stones before setting him alight and he died at the scene. It is alleged that his car, a VW Polo vivo was also set alight. According to the information available, the deceased and his friend were allegedly suspected to be members of an Automatic Teller Machine card theft syndicate that rob people of their cards, clone them and later withdraw money from victims accounts using those cards. The deceased’s companion managed to escape with a wound on the head and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
The police were called to the scene and the community became violent and threw stones at them. A police vehicle was allegedly damaged in the process. The police allegedly fired shots in the process in order to disperse the crowd. It was after the commotion that the body of a 51-year-old woman was found behind the store.
Investigation into the matter still is still underway and more arrest are imminent as the police are working around the clock to ensure that perpetrators are apprehended.
Meanwhile a murder case that has been registered in respect of the 51-year-old woman has been referred to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.
