Today, Provincial Task Team members deployed at Newcastle conducted an operation in Madadeni area and arrested a 24-year-old female for possession of dagga. It is alleged that members received information about a woman who was selling dagga in the area. They proceeded to the said house and a search was conducted. Members found 222 small packets of dagga sealed in a plastic bag. She was charged for possession of dagga and is expected to appear in the Madadeni Magistrates’ Court soon.
Members proceeded to Newcastle taxi rank where they arrested nine security guards for contravening firearms Act. Nine firearms and 270 live rounds of ammunition were confiscated. The confiscated firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of crime in the province.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for the arrest of suspects. “The firearms will be thoroughly checked if they were not used in any shooting incident that occurred in the Newcastle area. I encouraged community members to work together with the police deployed in the area by providing information about any criminal activities in Newcastle and the surroundings. The members deployed in the area will stabilised the situation and bring peace while members of the Hawks and Crime Intelligence work around the clock tracing those involved in the killing of taxi owners in the area,” she said
