Earlier I received notification that today’s Chief Whips’ Forum had been postponed and separately that tomorrow’s National Assembly Programming Committee (NAPC) meeting had been cancelled. The Speaker’s office failed to provide reasons in both instances.
At the last NAPC, The Speaker suggested that she was considering extending the 11 August oral questions session in order to include the line of questioning disrupted during the now infamous session held on 21 August. She also assured me that she was in talks with The Presidency and securing provisional oral question session dates for the rest of this year. The cancellation of tomorrow’s NAPC has deprived me and the rest of the opposition an opportunity to confirm the Speaker’s efforts and any progress made.
Furthermore, postponing and cancelling two of Parliament’s most crucial administrative committees with the State of the Nation Address a week away is incredibly reckless and will put undue pressure on both committees.
I will write to The Speaker, Baleka Mbete, as well as the Chief Whip of the ANC, Stone Sizani, and request an explanation for the postponements and cancellations.
This year’s Parliament is already off to a late start and there is a lot of work ahead of it. If The Speaker is serious about getting Parliament working and holding the executive to account, she’ll prioritise these committees’ sittings.
