ABUJA: THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, has called for the immediate prosecution of suspects arrested in connection with violence characterising the run-up to next month’s polls.
Emmanuel Ojukwu, Force Public Relations Officer, said Abba had earlier directed Zonal Assistant Inspector Generals and State Commissioners of Police to crack down on political thugs and miscreants perpetrating mayhem and causing an untold discomfort for supporters and actors of opposing political parties during the period.
He said some suspects had been arrested in connection with perpetration of violence during political campaigns at different locations in line with to section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and sections 94and 95 of the Electoral Act.
Ojukwu said Abba ordered their immediate prosecution of the suspects, regardless of their status in society, in the courts of law. He said the IGP advised politicians against inciting violence.
Ojukwu reiterated the force’s commitment to ensure peace and would not condone any act of hooliganism from any quarters.
“Members of the public are assured of their safety always and equally enjoined to support the Police by reporting any untoward criminal act in their areas promptly at the nearest police station,” Ojukwu said.
