Last night police working at the Glebelands Hostel came under attack when they intervened after a group at one of the blocks attacked another block in the hostel complex. It is alleged that at approximately 20:00, police responded to gunshots at one of the blocks at the hostel. When they responded they came across a group of approximately 300 who were responsible for the attack. The group then opened fire on police and threw rocks and stones at the police vehicles.
Police then called in for more re-enforcements and members of the Public Order Police penetrated the hostel with armoured vehicles. Fortunately no police officer was seriously injured however police vehicle were damaged as a result of the attack. When police entered the hostel they found that a 60-year-old man was fatally wounded. It was reported that two others were injured and taken to hospital. Police at Umlazi are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. Police deployments will remain in place at the hostel.
The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the murder and the attack on police officers. “It is disturbing that groups within the hostel are asking for police intervention on public platforms but police have come under attack on numerous occasions at the hostel when they intervene. We appeal to leaders at the hostel to work with government departments that have intervened and stop the senseless killings,” she said.
