In the early hours of this morning KwaMashu police came under fire from two unknown gunmen along Musa Road in the KwaMashu hostel. Police had received a report of a murder at the hostel and proceeded to the scene. While police were approaching the crime scene, two armed men opened fire on them.
Police officers then got out of the vehicle and returned fire causing the suspects to flee on foot. One of the police officers was injured on his foot during the shootout and was taken to hospital where he was treated and released. Police then proceeded to the murder scene where a 25-year-old man was found dead inside his informal dwelling with multiple gunshot wounds. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation at KwaMashu police station and police have launched an investigation to pursue the suspects.
The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the attack on police. “We appeal to the community to assist us in finding the killers so that they can face the consequences of their actions. We also appeal to the community to report people with unlicensed firearms. It is really worrying that police are attacked while executing their duties yet the community demands police patrols in the area. We are very fortunate that our members escaped serious injury during the gunfire,” she said.
