The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), retired General Muhammadu Buhari has come under attack from an aide of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, for attending the Lagos State Government’s 2015 thanksgiving service held last Sunday.
Buhari’s attendance at the service conducted by the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye was the APC presidential candidate’s second consecutive appearance at a predominantly Christian event. He had earlier attended the wedding ceremony of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s daughter at St Joseph’s Catholic Chaplaincy of Imo State University, Owerri, on 11th October, last year.
Buhari’s attendance of the Lagos event was on the invitation of Governor Babatunde Fashola Okupe, the Senior Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the President, said: “It was a great sight to see Buhari on the front row at the Lagos thanksgiving service. The consultants trying to rebrand GMB are truly working hard to clean up his age-long reputation as a religious fundamentalist.
It will be nice to see him take Holy Communion at the Christ Cathedral in Lagos. It is quite perplexing to see what extent some politicians are willing to go to capture power.”
While addressing the congregation at the Lagos thanksgiving service, Buhari said that contrary to the impression that he was an Islamic fundamentalist, he had, all his life, believed that Nigerians must worship God according to their wish.
“The duty of government is not religion but security for all Nigerians, regardless of tribe and religion,” Buhari stated.
