This morning at 05:00 the Commander of Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Pietermaritzburg, Lieutenant Colonel Mmeli Ngubane received information of a suspicious motor vehicle in the Umsunduzi policing area.
He immediately responded in his private motor vehicle as he was off duty. After spotting the suspicious motor vehicle he approached the vehicle which had six occupants. Five of the occupants immediately fled in nearby bushes. The police officer approached the vehicle and during a search of the vehicle he recovered an AK 47 rifle with 25 rounds of ammunition as well as a 303 rifle with four rounds of ammunition.
A case of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was opened at Umsunduzi SAPS for investigation after the driver of the vehicle was detained. The suspect (39) is expected to appear at the Camperdown Magistrates Court tomorrow. Five other suspects are still being sought by police.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police officer for his bravery and dedication. “It is obvious that our police officers have fostered a good relationship with members of the community who will call them even if they are off duty and provide them with information on criminal activities. I am proud of Lieutenant Colonel Ngubane for responding even though he was off duty, thus apprehending the suspect whilst recovering these high calibre firearms,” she said.
