The fight against property related crimes gained another success when Stilfontein Stock Theft Unit recovered 23 stolen sheep.

The sheep, belonging to five different owners were found this morning under the bridge near Extension 21 in Jouberton. Stilfontein Stock Theft Unit members were conducting an investigation and were searching for the stolen stock when they found 23 sheep under the bridge.

Out of 23 sheep, 16 were already slaughtered. It appeared that that 7 died after they were unable to move as their legs were tied with wires. However, one sheep was found alive.

Four suspects, including a 16-year-old-woman have been arrested. Preliminary investigation has revealed that a stock theft warrant of arrest was recently issued against the 16-year-old-woman’s father who is alleged to have been the main suspect in the crime.

The suspects are expected to appear in Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court soon to face charges of stock theft and cruelty to animals.

The community is discouraged from buying meat sold on the street as that is in contravention of Meat Safety Act, 2000 (ACT NO. 40 OF 2000) and creates a market for criminals committing stock theft crime.
