LAGOS: A LOCAL human rights group has launched a mobile application to enable more Nigerians to understand and use the Freedom of Information (FIO) Act.
Media Rights Agenda (MRA), which has launched the Android-based application, said the move will help more Nigerians to understand and use the legislation to empower themselves.
Government enacted FIO Act two years ago to allow citizens have more access to public information.
Since it act came into place, only few Nigerian have been able to access public information using it as many have limited understanding of how the process works.
Efforts have also been made by several non-government organizations to enlighten the public on the Act.
MRA’s Executive Director, Edetaen Ojo, said the development of the applications was part of an ongoing effort by MRA to create awareness about the FOI Act and to make the law available to Nigerians across all social strata and ensure that it was fully utilized.
“With about 175 million connected mobile telephone lines in Nigeria at the moment, we are convinced that the mobile phone is a veritable platform for making this powerful piece of legislation available to most Nigerians at no cost,” said Ojo.
The latest FOI App for android devices complements two similar apps for java enabled devices and blackberry phones which it launched last year.
Eko-Konnect designed the app for MRA with support from the Ford Foundation.
“This latest app is motivated by the upsurge in the use of android devices in Nigeria since we launched the earlier apps nearly three years ago,” added Ojo.
He further said that the android version of the FOI app, java: enabled and Blackberry phones versions were available for download from MRA’s website.
Ojo added that the FOI android apps comes with a voice call option, the capability to send short message service (SMS) and even email from an android device in which it was installed.
These options, according to him, are to make it easy for users to contact MRA for assistance on the FOI Act while the app also contains a link to MRA’s website for access to relevant materials on the Act.
